Can the HPV Vaccine Prevent Cervical Cancer? Benefits, Safety, and Effectiveness

Cervical cancer is largely preventable when HPV vaccination, appropriate screening, and timely medical care are combined. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common infection, and persistent infection with high-risk HPV types is responsible for almost all cervical cancer cases. The HPV vaccine is designed to prevent infection with important cancer-causing HPV types before exposure occurs. It does not treat an existing HPV infection or established cervical cancer, but it can significantly reduce the risk of developing HPV-related disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies HPV vaccination and regular cervical screening as key measures for reducing the burden of cervical cancer.
