Bangalore University is a leading university of South India, which was set up in 1964 to fulfil the educational demands of the Karnataka state, which continued to expand to new dimensions. It is a unitary university initially, and later became an affiliating university in 1973. The building of the university occurred in the post-independence period, when there was deep concern about the consequences of having high educational needs due to the fast-growing city of Bangalore, which was shifting to one of the educational and technological centres.
