Car Rental Evolves with Flexible Mobility and Travel Preferences

Car rental is becoming an increasingly important mobility option as travelers and consumers seek flexible alternatives to vehicle ownership and public transportation. Tourism activity, business travel, road trips, airport mobility, digital booking platforms, and changing transportation preferences are influencing how people access rental vehicles. A recent study by MarkNtel Advisors states that the global car rental industry was valued at USD 113 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 124 billion in 2026 to USD 219 billion by 2032, registering a CAGR of 9.94% during 2026–2032. The industry is being supported by tourism, business mobility, digital booking, flexible transportation needs, expanding vehicle availability, and changing consumer preferences. Tourism remains a major contributor to rental demand, while business travelers increasingly use rental vehicles for flexible transportation between airports, hotels, offices, conferences, and customer locations. Digital booking platforms are also simplifying vehicle reservations by allowing consumers to compare vehicle categories, prices, rental periods, insurance options, mileage conditions, pickup locations, and customer reviews. Airport rental locations continue to provide convenient access for travelers, while diverse fleets including compact cars, sedans, SUVs, luxury vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and electric vehicles are expanding consumer choice. The growing adoption of electric vehicles is also influencing rental fleet strategies, although charging infrastructure, vehicle range, and customer familiarity remain important considerations. Technology is further transforming the rental experience through mobile applications, digital confirmations, connected vehicles, remote access, digital inspections, location services, and automated mileage or fuel tracking. Transparent pricing and clear rental terms are becoming increasingly important as customers evaluate insurance, fuel, mileage, deposits, airport charges, and additional driver fees. As car rental becomes increasingly integrated with ride-hailing, car sharing, public transportation, and other mobility services, flexible rental periods and digital-first experiences are expected to remain important growth drivers. The projected expansion of the global car rental sector indicates continued opportunities across leisure, corporate, airport, electric mobility, and shared transportation applications.
