Burdwan University was established by the government of West Bengal on 15th June 1960. It has an interesting history as it originated at a time when the Zamindari system was gone. Uday Chand Mahtab, the representative of the last of Burdwan Raj, was extremely generous when he gave away almost all the property of Burdwan to the state.
